ENGLISH SUMMARY
Blind baristas, and the people who trained them
Petit Tuz New Life Association (社團法人中華小兔子新生命協會) is a non-profit in Banqiao, New Taipei City. We train people who are blind, have low vision or multiple disabilities to become professional baristas — free of charge, to the same assessment standard as sighted baristas. The same room is a community care centre serving over a hundred older adults a week.
What we do
Barista training
Four to six months per cohort. Bluetooth kettles and talking scales replace the steps that rely on sight; pouring is learned by ear.
Employment support
Placement, workplace adjustment advice and follow-up after people start work — including at our own counter.
Community care centre
Older adults and trainees share one space. The unplanned result: they look after each other.
By the numbers
Each figure carries its period and source. Where a government announcement or news report can confirm it, it is marked verifiable.

Questions we get asked
+Can a totally blind person really brew specialty coffee?
Yes. The steps that normally rely on sight are replaced: a Bluetooth temperature-controlled kettle handles water temperature, a talking scale handles dose, and equipment stays in fixed positions so the hands build muscle memory. Pouring rhythm is learned by listening to the sound of water. Our assessment standard is the same as for sighted baristas.
+How long does training take?
Each cohort runs four to six months, free of charge, including the specialty beans used for practice.
+Are your numbers independently verified?
Some are. Figures backed by government announcements or news coverage are marked verifiable; figures that come only from our own records are marked as self-reported. We publish how each number is calculated, along with its limits.
+Can overseas organisations visit or exchange methods?
Yes, and we welcome it. The Hong Kong Society for the Blind has visited to observe our training, and a visually impaired coffee professional from Guangzhou came in 2026. Our methods are meant to be copied.
